Wet and warm, that’s Cambodia in September. Temperatures average 26°C (79°F) and the daily rain tends to fall intensely for a few hours rather than all day, though all day rainfall is still a risk.
The intense rains also make traveling in the rural northeastern regions such as Ratanakiri and Mondulkiri extremely difficult if not impossible. The beaches in the south also receive a lot of rain and are therefore not ideal for relaxing or sunbathing.
The rains of the past few months do have their advantages. The countryside is in full bloom and the recently planted rice fields are lush green carpets. The Tonle Sap Lake is fuller, allowing boat access to see the flooded forests and floating villages. There are also fewer tourists so sights such as Angkor Wat are less crowded.
