January is right in the middle of the dry season, which makes it one of the best months to visit. You can expect sunny skies, little rain, and temperatures averaging between the low 20s and low 30s Celsius (low 70s to mid-80s Fahrenheit) throughout the country.
Central Thailand, including Bangkok, will experience little rain and warm temperatures, hovering in the high 20’s Celsius (low 80’s Fahrenheit). Eastern Thailand will get maybe four days of rain this month. In northern Thailand the areas of Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai, will be sunny and warm during the day but nights can dip to 10°C (50°F) so if you are camping, remember to plan accordingly.
The sun and warm temperatures in the low 30s Celsius (mid-80s Fahrenheit) make Thailand’s beaches perfect this time of year. The islands of Koh Chang and Kot Kood, located off the East Coast, are perfect in January. The gulf islands, and the beaches of the southeast, such as Koh Samui, may see the occasional short shower, but are still beautiful. The beaches of the southwest, like Phuket, are perfect this time of year.
The perfect weather and end of the western holiday season make January a very popular time to visit Thailand. Despite the larger crowds and higher prices, the popularity is merited!
