Day 1: Hue City Tour One Day
Our tour starts this morning at 8:00 am when your guide meets you at your hotel and head to the river for a cruise along the Perfume River. Sailing along the river, we’ll see bustling fishing villages and quiet countryside. Our first stop is the Thien Mu Pagoda, the unofficial symbol of Hue. Also known as the Heavenly Lady Pagoda, it is a beautiful compound that is home to a number of artefacts including the car that the monk, Thich Quang Duc, drove to Saigon where he burned himself alive to protest the South Vietnamese Regime’s treatment of Buddhists. This photograph is one of the most memorable of the 20th Century. Before getting back on the boat we will take a quick tour of the local village then we continue to Emperor Tu Duc’s Mausoleum. This large compound was built between 1864 and 1867 by 3000 soldiers and workers for the Nguyen Dynasty who was Vietnam’s longest reigning emperor.
After exploring the Mausoleum we cruise back to Hue to enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before touring Hue’s Imperial City.
During our tour of the Imperial City, we will visit the Citadel and the Forbidden Purple City. This complex is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and was the capital of imperial Vietnam during the Nguyen Dynasty from 1802-1945. We’ll wander through the many well-preserved and restored structures as well as some magnificent ruins.
As we finish our exploration of the Imperial City, you will arrive back at your hotel around 6:00 pm. Please feel free to ask us for some restaurant recommendations!
