Day 1: One Day to Handicraft Villages around Hanoi
After being picked up at your hotel, around 8:00 am from your hotel, we’ll leave Hanoi and follow the mighty Red River to arrive at Bat Trang Ceramic Village. This is a typical northern Vietnamese village that has preserved its charm and small village atmosphere despite the popularity of its world class ceramic production. Here, we enjoy a tour of the village and visit with a local craftsman who will lead us to a pottery making class. After this, we will have a stop at their buzzing ceramic market where we browse the beautiful pieces created here. We will visit the Bat Trang temple to catch a glimpse into the life of the village and its history.
Following lunch at a local restaurant, enjoy the short drive to reach Dong Ho to explore the town and learn about its main industry. This village is famous throughout Vietnam for its more than 300-year-old tradition of producing Vietnamese woodblock paintings. The process of making this folk art is created by hand using traditional methods and even in 2017, continues to thrive. The art created here portrays the realities and dreams of the artist and the viewer and is an important part of the Vietnamese cultural aesthetic.
Our last stop before returning to Hanoi will be at But Thap Pagoda. One of northern Vietnam’s most famous pagodas, it is an impressive complex of ten buildings and many masterpieces of wood carving. The most famous culture housed at the pagoda is the masterpiece of thousand-handed and the thousand-eyed Guanyin.
