As you can see in the table, the weather in Vietnam has the distinct division among three regions. This is the only one experiencing enough four seasons in one year. As regards the geographical location, Northern Vietnam can be split into three smaller areas such as Midlands and Red River Delta, Northwestern and Northeastern.
Midlands & Red River Delta: Hanoi, Halong Bay, Mai Chau, Pu Luong and Ninh Binh.
The whole region of the North has a distinct winter and summer season. The weather from November to April is quite cozy for foreigners (cool and dry) with the average temperature 17 – 22 celsius degree. The lowest temperature will fall between January and March, even under 10 celsius degree.
Summer lasts from May to October when it is hot and humid and the region experiences its highest rainfall. July to September are often the wettest months of the year. During these months severe weather (tropical storms or typhoons) can prevent junks sailing in Halong Bay.
The Northwest and Northeast: Sapa, Mu Cang Chai and Ha Giang.
The climate in Northwest of Vietnam is divided into two seasons: the dry season runs from October to late March with the wet season lasting from April to September. It can get very cold and frosty in December and January, especially at night.
The best months to travel in the north-east (Ha Giang) is during the dry season, from October to April, although December and January can get very cold. We recommend avoiding traveling in Ha Giang during the rainy season (May to September).
In essence, the most beautiful time to trekking via the lush terraced fields under the light sunshine in mountainous areas and enjoy the chilled-out ambiance on an overnight cruise in Halong Bay is the duration March – April and October – December.
