Tay Phuong Pagoda, the destination to calm down

Tay Phuong Pagoda, also called Sung Phuc Pagoda, sits on top of Tay Phuong Mountain proudly holding many valuable statues of Buddha, surrounded by green areas

Overview

Located on the hill of Thach Xa town in Thach That district, the picturesque Tay Phuong Pagoda is 45km west of Hanoi. This is one of the oldest pagodas in Vietnam and is known for its sculpture and unique architecture. According to legend, the pagoda was built in the third century. Having undergone various renovations and installation of the bell, the pagoda was renamed Tay Phuong.

Practical information

Recently, the pagoda welcomes more and more Vietnamese and foreign tourists. From Hanoi, it is accessible by road through the countryside, amid immense rice fields. A staircase of 239 steps leads to the entrance of the pagoda. Built in the 7th century, it was restored in the late 17th century and in 1794 during the reign of Tay Son. This is not only an important place of worship (pilgrimage festival and the 6th day of the third lunar month) but above all a beautiful architectural ensemble.

The double roof of the pagoda, wooden covered with tiles, with four slopes connected by curved corners and heavily decorated with dragon is a marvel of the art of wood carving in Vietnam. This art can also be admired through a beautiful set of statues of Buddha, the goddess of a thousand arms, bodhisattvas and disciples. The pagoda is often compared to the Buddhist statues museum of the Country.
