Mount Popa, a volcano 1518 meters above sea level, is located 45km from Bagan. It is a place of pilgrimage where people come to honor the 37 largest Burmese Nats. Southwest of Mount Popa is Taung Kalat, an ancient volcanic chimney of 737 meters, also sometimes called Mount Popa. A Buddhist monastery is located at its top.
Popa is renowned for being a cool oasis with green forest. Its rich vegetarian growing on the fertile volcanic ash is fed by over 200 rivers. The fauna includes numerous monkeys.
It takes 30 minutes to walk to the top. There we admire a splendid panorama. If you do not want to offend the Nats, dispense to wear black, red or green, do not swear and do not bring meat, especially pork. En route, visit a farm where they make alcohol. You will have chance to discover the rural lifestyle of the inhabitants of the region.
