Tips for Internal Flights in Vietnam

Travelling around Vietnam has never been easier with the wide domestic flight network. This article will give you some essential info when traveling by plane in the S-shaped country.

1 | Main Domestic Hubs

Airport IATA 2025 Update & Why It Matters
Hanoi – Noi Bai HAN 16 self-bag-drop kiosks + facial-ID gates in T1; quickest gateway to Ha Long, Ninh Binh, Sapa.
Ho Chi Minh City – Tan Son Nhat SGN Terminal 3 opened 17 Apr 2025; all domestic flights moved here—10 min walk to T2 (international).
Da Nang DAD Central “switchboard”; ≤ 90 min hop to any other big city; ideal hub for Hue & Hoi An.
Direct spokes Cam Ranh (CXR), Phu Quoc (PQC), Hue (HUI), Can Tho (VCA), Van Don (VDO) etc.—often skip a HAN/SGN change.

2 | Airlines at a Glance

Carrier Service Model Free Allowance (Economy)† 2025 Snapshot
Vietnam Airlines Full-service 12 kg cabin + 23 kg checked* 4-star Skytrax, best on-time.
Bamboo Airways Hybrid 7 kg + 15 kg (Eco) / 20 kg (Plus) Network trimmed but solid on trunk routes.
VietJet Air Ultra-low-cost 7 kg cabin only Cheapest fares, frequent flash sales, watch for delays.
Pacific Airlines Low-cost (VNA sibling) 7 kg cabin only Same bag rules as VietJet.
VASCO ATR-72 regional 7 kg + 10 kg Super-short hops: e.g., SGN–Con Dao.
Vietravel Airlines Leisure LCC 7 kg cabin only Seasonal beach and charter flights.

* VNA “Economy Lite” = carry-on only.
† Add-on fees in Section 5.

3 | Booking & Fare Tips

  • Compare, then book direct. Use Google Flights / Skyscanner to see deals, but finalize on the airline’s own site for free seat selection and easier changes.

  • Flash-sale windows: Tue–Thu, ~11:00–14:00 VN time. Zero-dong or 19 000 đ seats vanish fast—pay immediately.

  • Peak surcharges: Tết (Lunar New Year) adds US $40–100 per leg; lock flights 60+ days out.

  • Itinerary > fare. A cheap SGN ticket is pointless if your whole tour is northern—domestic hops will erase the saving.

4 | Check-in & Boarding Rules

Flight type Counters open Counters close Gate closes Online / kiosk check-in*
Domestic 2 h before ETD 40 min ( 45 min VietJet ) 15 min 24 h → 60 min; mobile BP accepted at HAN, SGN, DAD, CXR, PQC
International 3 h 50 min 20 min 24 h → 60 min; print BP for immigration stamp

*Smaller airports may still print you a paper pass free of charge.

How early to arrive?
Checked bag: ≥ 90 min domestic / 2 h international.
Carry-on only: 60 min is usually safe—if you already hold a mobile BP.

Missed counter?
Full-service flex tickets re-route for a fee; most low-cost fares are forfeited—you’ll buy a walk-up seat at day-of prices.

5 | Baggage Allowances & Add-On Pricing

Airline Cabin Checked bag included Pre-buy top-ups (web/app)
Vietnam Airlines 12 kg (or 2 × 7 kg) 23 kg* +10 kg ≈ US $12
Bamboo 7 kg 15 kg Eco / 20 kg Plus +15 kg ≈ US $10
VietJet / Pacific 7 kg none 20 kg ≈ US $10 online (double at airport)
VASCO 7 kg 10 kg Limited hold—pre-buy early

*VNA “Economy Lite” excludes checked bag.

Rules to note
• Lithium power banks > 100 Wh must ride in cabin.
• Fresh durian or strong fish sauce banned in cabin—check it or lose it.

6 | Fly to Saigon or Hanoi — Which one is better?

Choosing the port of entry must be mainly based on your trip itinerary and aspirations to explore the country. A handful of travelers usually begin in the south by flying into Ho Chi Minh City since the airfare to the biggest city of Vietnam is cheaper than that to the capital city. Moreover, it is said that Ho Chi Minh City offers first-time travelers a slightly “softer” landing culturally in Vietnam.

Nonetheless, you should balance two factors between itinerary and budget in order to make the right decision. For example, your journey just covers only Northern and Central Vietnam, but you make a reservation to Ho Chi Minh City thanks to the cheaper price as usual. It leads to a consequence that you have to waste much money on domestic flights to move among places. Hence, the amount of money you spend is much more than your original thought.

In essence, to come up with the optimal choice, you have to keep a cool head and don’t let yourself be allured by promotions that you are under impression that you catch the amazing bargain.

6.1 Air-Fare Economics

Metric (summer 2025) SGN – Ho Chi Minh City HAN – Hanoi
Average long-haul return (ex-Europe/US) US $770 US $840
Typical shoulder-season sale US $650 (thanks to extra USA & Gulf carrier capacity) US $720
Domestic add-on to cross country SGN ⇅ HAN: US $60–120 one-way (2 h) Same cost in reverse

Take-away: the headline saving into SGN is often erased by one northbound hop if your route is northern-heavy.

6.2 Match Entry Port to Itinerary

If your first 4–5 nights are… Fly into Why
Ha Long Bay, Ninh Binh, Sapa mountains HAN 1–3 h ground transfers; avoids a 2-hour domestic flight from SGN.
Imperial Hue & Hoi An coast DAD Direct to the central coast; no need for SGN ⇅ HAN shuttle.
Mekong Delta, Cu Chi tunnels, Phu Quoc or Con Dao islands SGN All southern day-trips start here and the island flights hub at T3.
A north-to-south grand tour (≥14 days) Arrive HAN / Depart SGN (or reverse) “Open-jaw” avoids back-tracking 1 600 km and saves one domestic leg.

6.3 “Soft Landing” & Jet-Lag Comfort

Feel on day-one HAN – Hanoi SGN – Ho Chi Minh City
Urban pace Narrow Old-Quarter lanes, scooter mayhem—intense cultural hit. Wide boulevards, riverfront, more Western cafés—gentler start.
Airport transfer 45 min fixed-price cab or 20 min express train to city. 20 min by Grab/taxi off-peak; rail link due 2026.
Hotel stock Many boutique heritage stays under US $80. Larger pool of four- and five-star internationals.
Climate on arrival Cool Nov–Mar; humid May–Aug. Dry Nov–Apr; hotter but steady temps year-round.

If you’re travel-weary, SGN’s riverside districts and new T3 arrivals hall feel less frenetic than Hanoi’s Old Quarter at rush hour.

6.4 Time-Cost Matrix

Scenario Extra cost if you choose the “wrong” entry port Lost travel time
North-only trip but land SGN Domestic fare US $70 + taxi transfers US $15 = US $85 4 h (flight + two airport rides)
South-only trip but land HAN Similar US $85 and 4 h swing in reverse.
Full north→south tour but book a return ticket into SGN One extra domestic leg and half-day to train/plane back north = US $70–120 + 5 h

6.5 When a Cheaper Ticket Is Actually Worth It

  1. Mileage runs / status seekers – if you need the flight credits, grab SGN even for a northern loop.

  2. Ultra-tight budget – a US $150 family difference may outweigh the 2-hour domestic hop.

  3. Multi-country start – coming from Cambodia or Thailand, SGN fares / connections are often better.

6.6 Decision Checklist

  1. Map your first three hotel nights.

  2. Price open-jaw (into HAN, out of SGN or vice-versa).

  3. Factor one domestic hop (US $60-120) if you ignore Step 1.

  4. Check arrival-day climate – high-humidity Hanoi June–August vs. scorching but dry Saigon.

  5. Book. Promotions that break Steps 1–3 are not bargains.

Bottom line:

  • Land at HAN for northern icons, SGN for southern river-and-island life.

  • Use an open-jaw ticket for a full north-to-south run.

  • Only chase a cheaper fare if it doesn’t force an extra domestic leg that steals both time and money
