14-Day Vietnam Itinerary

14-Day Vietnam Itinerary: North to South Private Tour

Two weeks is the perfect timeframe to travel Vietnam from North to South. With private transfers and well-paced stops, you can experience Hanoi’s old quarter, cruise Ha Long Bay, wander Hoi An’s lantern-lit streets, and explore the Mekong Delta – all without feeling rushed.

1. Why 14 days is perfect for Vietnam

Updated for 2026 by Tonkin Voyage Travel – a licensed Vietnamese tour operator since 2009.

Vietnam stretches 1,650 kilometres from the Chinese border to the Gulf of Thailand. Trying to see it all in 7–10 days means spending more time at airports than actually experiencing the country. Two weeks gives you the breathing room to enjoy each destination properly – especially if you value comfort over speed.

The maths behind 14 days

  • 3 regions (North, Central, South) × 4–5 days each = a balanced, well-paced journey
  • 2–3 domestic flights save you 30+ hours of road travel compared to doing everything overland
  • 2–3 rest days built in for recovery, free exploration, or spontaneous discoveries
  • Buffer days protect your itinerary from weather disruptions or flight delays

Flight times to Vietnam

From To Hanoi To Ho Chi Minh City
Sydney / Melbourne 9–10 hours (direct) 8–9 hours (direct)
London 11–12 hours (direct or 1 stop) 12–13 hours
Los Angeles / New York 16–20 hours (1–2 stops) 16–20 hours (1–2 stops)

💡 Why private touring matters for 2 weeks: With a private guide and driver, your 14 days are maximised. No waiting for group members, no rigid schedules, no early-morning wake-up calls. You set the pace each morning – and your guide adjusts the plan to match your energy level.

2. Your 14-day route at a glance

This is our most recommended route for first-time visitors: a North-to-South journey covering all three regions with 2–3 nights at each major stop.

Days Destination Region Nights Key Experience
1–3 Hanoi & Ninh Binh North 3 Old Quarter, temples, Trang An boat ride
4–5 Ha Long Bay North 1 (overnight cruise) Limestone karsts, kayaking, sunrise on deck
6–7 Hue Central 2 Imperial Citadel, royal tombs, Perfume River
8–10 Hoi An Central 3 Ancient Town, cooking class, beach, tailoring
11–12 Ho Chi Minh City South 2 War history, Cu Chi Tunnels, street food
13–14 Mekong Delta South 1–2 Floating markets, sampan rides, fruit orchards

Total internal flights: 2 (Hanoi → Hue or Da Nang, Da Nang → Ho Chi Minh City) – each flight is just 1–1.5 hours.

Total hotel changes: 5 times over 14 days – an average of 2.5 nights per base, which is our recommended minimum for comfortable travel.

3. Day-by-day itinerary

Days 1–3: Hanoi & Red River Delta

Day Programme
Day 1 Arrival in Hanoi. Private airport transfer to your hotel in the Old Quarter. Gentle evening walk around Hoan Kiem Lake to ease into the local rhythm. Welcome dinner at a curated Vietnamese restaurant.
Day 2 Hanoi city exploration. Morning visit to the Temple of Literature (Vietnam’s first university, est. 1070) and Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum complex. Afternoon cyclo ride through the 36 Old Streets. Evening: Water Puppet Show – a uniquely Hanoian tradition dating back 1,000 years.
Day 3 Day trip to Ninh Binh. Private car to Trang An Scenic Complex (UNESCO World Heritage). Sampan boat ride through limestone grottoes surrounded by rice paddies. Climb Mua Cave viewpoint for panoramic views of the “Ha Long Bay on land.” Return to Hanoi by late afternoon.

Where you stay: A boutique hotel in Hanoi’s Old Quarter (4–5 star). Walking distance to Hoan Kiem Lake, local eateries, and the vibrant night market.

🗺️ This section follows a similar route to our Central North Vietnam tour (8 days).

Days 4–5: Ha Long Bay overnight cruise

Day Programme
Day 4 Hanoi → Ha Long Bay. Private transfer to the cruise port (3.5 hours via new expressway). Board your boutique cruise ship by midday. Afternoon: kayaking through hidden lagoons and exploring Sung Sot Cave. Sunset cocktails on the sundeck. Seafood dinner on board.
Day 5 Ha Long Bay → Hanoi → Fly to Hue. Early morning Tai Chi session on deck. Brunch while cruising past floating fishing villages. Disembark by noon. Transfer to Hanoi airport for the 1-hour evening flight to Hue.

🛳️ Cruise Upgrade: For extra privacy, ask about Lan Ha Bay – a quieter, less-crowded alternative adjacent to Ha Long Bay with equally stunning scenery. We recommend Lan Ha for couples seeking a more intimate experience.

Days 6–7: Hue – The Imperial City

Day Programme
Day 6 Hue city tour. Morning at the Imperial Citadel (UNESCO), the former seat of Vietnam’s Nguyen Dynasty. Afternoon: dragon boat cruise along the Perfume River to Thien Mu Pagoda. Evening: royal-style dinner with Hue’s famous refined cuisine.
Day 7 Royal tombs & Hai Van Pass. Visit the ornate tombs of Emperor Tu Duc and Khai Dinh. After lunch, scenic drive over the legendary Hai Van Pass – voted one of the world’s greatest coastal roads. Arrive in Hoi An by evening.

Where you stay: A heritage hotel along the Perfume River in Hue (4–5 star), offering tranquil gardens and river-view rooms.

Days 8–10: Hoi An – Ancient Town & beach

Day Programme
Day 8 Hoi An Ancient Town. Walking tour through the UNESCO-listed old town: Japanese Covered Bridge, Chinese assembly halls, and centuries-old merchant houses. Afternoon: visit a local tailor for custom clothing (ready within 24 hours). Evening: stroll the lantern-lit riverside.
Day 9 Countryside & cooking class. Morning bicycle ride through Tra Que herb village. Private cooking class in a riverside kitchen – learn to make fresh spring rolls, cao lầu noodles, and white rose dumplings. Afternoon free for An Bang Beach or spa.
Day 10 Free day in Hoi An. Sleep in, pick up your tailored clothing, explore hidden cafés, or take an optional half-day trip to My Son Sanctuary (UNESCO) – the Angkor Wat of Vietnam. This buffer day is what makes 14 days special.

Where you stay: A riverside boutique hotel or beach resort near An Bang (4–5 star). Hoi An is one of Vietnam’s most walkable towns – perfect for leisurely evenings.

💡 Why 3 nights in Hoi An? Hoi An rewards slow travel. Unlike Hanoi or Saigon, the Ancient Town is best enjoyed at a gentle pace – morning coffee by the river, afternoon at the beach, evening lantern glow. Rushing through Hoi An in one night is the biggest regret we hear from travellers.

Days 11–12: Ho Chi Minh City & Cu Chi Tunnels

Day Programme
Day 11 Fly to Ho Chi Minh City. Morning flight from Da Nang (1.5 hours). Afternoon: War Remnants Museum, Reunification Palace, and Notre-Dame Cathedral. Evening: rooftop dinner overlooking the Saigon River skyline.
Day 12 Cu Chi Tunnels excursion. Half-day trip to the famous tunnel network used during the Vietnam War. Crawl through sections of the original tunnels with your guide’s expert commentary. Afternoon: explore the vibrant Ben Thanh Market and Cho Lon (Chinatown).

Where you stay: A modern hotel in District 1 (4–5 star), within walking distance of the city’s historic landmarks and finest restaurants.

Days 13–14: Mekong Delta & departure

Day Programme
Day 13 Mekong Delta exploration. Private car to Ben Tre province (2 hours). Board a sampan boat to cruise through narrow palm-fringed canals. Visit coconut candy workshops, fruit orchards, and a local family for lunch. Afternoon: Cai Be floating market. Return to HCMC or stay overnight in Can Tho for a deeper experience.
Day 14 Departure. Final morning free for last-minute shopping or a farewell phở breakfast. Private transfer to Tan Son Nhat Airport for your departure flight.

4. What this trip costs

Every Tonkin Travel tour is 100% private and tailor-made, so pricing depends on your travel dates, hotel preferences, and group size. Here are realistic ranges for 2026:

Level Hotels Estimated Cost (per person, 2 travellers) Includes
Comfort 3–4 star charming hotels $2,000–$2,800 USD Private car, English-speaking guide, all transfers, 2 domestic flights, Ha Long cruise, meals as noted
Deluxe 4–5 star boutique hotels $2,800–$4,000 USD Everything in Comfort + premium cruise cabin, upgraded hotels, more included meals
Luxury 5-star & heritage properties $4,000–$6,000+ USD Everything in Deluxe + suite upgrades, private experiences, fine dining, spa treatments

*Prices are per person based on 2 travellers sharing. International flights not included. Peak season (Oct–Mar) may be 10–20% higher. Solo travellers: supplement applies.

💰 Value insight: A 14-day private tour often costs less per day than a shorter 7-day trip, because fixed costs (international flights, cruise, guide fees) are spread over more days. You get more Vietnam for your money.

5. Best time for a 14-day Vietnam trip

Because your 14-day journey crosses all three climate zones, timing matters. Here is the optimal window for each region:

Region Best Months Weather Avoid
North (Hanoi, Ha Long) Sep–Nov, Mar–May Cool & dry, clear skies Dec–Feb (cold), Jul–Aug (hot & humid)
Central (Hue, Hoi An) Feb–Aug Warm, low rainfall Oct–Dec (typhoon risk, heavy rain)
South (HCMC, Mekong) Nov–Apr Dry season, sunny May–Oct (afternoon showers, humidity)

Best overall window for a 14-day North-to-South trip: February–April and September–November. These shoulder seasons offer pleasant weather across all regions with fewer crowds and better hotel availability.

For month-by-month details, see our guide: The Best Time to Visit Vietnam.

6. How to customise your 14-day itinerary

The route above is our most popular template – but every Tonkin Travel journey is fully customisable. Here are the most requested modifications:

Add Sapa (extend to 16–17 days)

Insert 2–3 days after Hanoi to visit Vietnam’s most spectacular mountain town. Trek through terraced rice paddies among Hmong and Dao ethnic villages. Stay at a boutique mountain lodge with valley views.

🗺️ See our In-Depth Vietnam (16 days) which includes Sapa.

Add Phong Nha caves (extend to 16 days)

Insert 2 days between Hue and Hoi An to explore the world’s most impressive cave systems (UNESCO). Paradise Cave, Dark Cave, and the Phong Nha Cave boat ride are unforgettable additions.

🗺️ See our Authentic Luxury Vietnam (15 days) which features Phong Nha.

Beach extension – Phu Quoc or Con Dao (add 3–4 days)

End your journey on a tropical island. Phu Quoc offers pristine beaches, sunset fishing villages, and world-class resorts. Con Dao is more remote – perfect for couples seeking solitude, with Vietnam’s best snorkelling.

🗺️ See our Vietnam Sweet Honeymoon (14 days) which ends in Phu Quoc.

Combine Vietnam + Cambodia (extend to 18–21 days)

Add 4–5 days to continue from the Mekong Delta to Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. The temples of Angkor Wat are just a short flight from Ho Chi Minh City.

🗺️ See our A Glimpse of Indochina (14 days) and Essence of Vietnam & Cambodia (16 days).

7. Tips for couples & seniors (45+)

We design most of our 14-day itineraries for couples and mature travellers from Australia, the UK, and the US. Here is what makes the difference between a good trip and a truly exceptional one:

Pace & comfort

  • 2–3 nights per destination – no constant packing and unpacking
  • Late morning starts – enjoy a relaxed breakfast before each day’s excursion
  • Afternoon free time – pool, spa, or simply wandering at your own pace
  • No overnight trains or buses – we use domestic flights and private cars only

Hotels we select

  • Central locations – walk to restaurants and landmarks without taxis
  • Elevator access – no carrying luggage up narrow staircases
  • Breakfast included – start each day without logistics
  • Boutique properties over chain hotels – character, charm, and personal service

Private tour advantages

Aspect Group Tour Private Tour (Tonkin Travel)
Departure time Fixed- often 6:00 or 7:00 AM Flexible – you choose when to start
Itinerary changes Not possible Adjust daily with your guide
Dining Set restaurants for 20+ people Hand-picked restaurants for just you
Transport Large coach Private car with your own driver
Hotel choice Pre-selected by operator You choose the level and style
If you feel tired Must keep up with the group Skip an activity, rest, rejoin later

🛡️ Real-world example: Last year, a couple from Melbourne asked to skip the Cu Chi Tunnels afternoon (Day 12) in favour of a riverside café and massage. Their guide simply adjusted the schedule – no questions asked, no penalties. That flexibility is what private touring is all about.

8. Frequently Asked Questions

Is 14 days enough for Vietnam?

Yes – 14 days is the ideal duration for a comfortable North-to-South journey. Two weeks gives you enough time to experience Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Hue, Hoi An, Ho Chi Minh City, and the Mekong Delta with rest days built in. If you want to add Sapa or Phong Nha, we recommend extending to 16–17 days.

How much does a 14-day Vietnam tour cost?

Private tours typically range from $2,000–$2,800 per person (Comfort level) to $4,000–$6,000+ (Luxury level), based on 2 travellers. This includes private car, English-speaking guide, accommodation, domestic flights, and a Ha Long Bay cruise. International flights are not included.

What is the best route for 2 weeks in Vietnam?

The most popular route is North to South: Hanoi → Ninh Binh → Ha Long Bay → Hue → Hoi An → Ho Chi Minh City → Mekong Delta. This covers all three regions with 2–3 domestic flights. A South-to-North route also works perfectly – it simply reverses the order.

Can I customise a 14-day Vietnam itinerary?

Absolutely. All our tours are private and 100% tailor-made. You can add or remove destinations, upgrade hotels, extend your trip, or combine Vietnam with Cambodia or Laos. Tell us your dates and priorities, and we’ll create your personalised itinerary within 48 hours.

Should I start in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City?

Either works. We most commonly recommend starting in Hanoi because the North offers a gentler introduction to Vietnam – cooler temperatures, ancient culture, and a more traditional atmosphere. Starting in the South is ideal if your international flight arrives in Ho Chi Minh City.

Is Vietnam safe for seniors and couples?

Very safe. Vietnam is one of the safest countries in Southeast Asia for travellers. With a private tour, you have an English-speaking guide by your side, door-to-door transfers in air-conditioned vehicles, and carefully selected hotels. Our guides are experienced in assisting mature travellers and can adjust the pace daily.

Should I add Sapa to my 14-day itinerary?

If you have the time, Sapa is absolutely worth adding – but we recommend extending to 16–17 days rather than squeezing it into 14. Sapa requires a full day’s travel from Hanoi (or overnight train), plus 2 days for trekking. Adding it to a tight 14-day schedule would compromise your pace elsewhere.

What is the best time of year for a 14-day Vietnam trip?

The best overall windows are February–April and September–November. These months offer pleasant weather across all three regions (North, Central, South). Avoid October–December for Central Vietnam due to typhoon risk. See our Best Time to Visit Vietnam guide for detailed monthly breakdowns.
