ToggleFor a private tailor-made Vietnam journey, the price depends far more on the way the trip is designed than on the number of days alone. As a practical 2026 benchmark, Tonkin Travel’s current 14-day North-to-South planning guide estimates around US$2,000–2,800 per person at Comfort level, US$2,800–4,000 at Deluxe level and US$4,000–6,000+ for a Luxury journey, based on two travellers sharing and excluding international flights.
Those figures are not a fixed tariff. A private Vietnam tour is built around your dates, route, hotel style, number of travellers, guided days, domestic transport, cruises and activities. Two journeys of the same length can therefore have very different prices even when they visit many of the same places.
The useful question is not simply “How much does Vietnam cost per day?” It is “What is included in the private journey I am comparing, and which parts of the trip are driving the price?”
Private Vietnam tour cost at a glance
For a typical 14-day private journey covering several regions, Tonkin Travel currently uses the following planning ranges on its English site:
| Travel level | Typical hotel style | Indicative 14-day cost |
|---|---|---|
| Comfort | Well-selected 3–4 star and character hotels | US$2,000–2,800 per person |
| Deluxe | 4–5 star boutique and higher-category properties | US$2,800–4,000 per person |
| Luxury | 5-star, heritage, premium resorts and upgraded experiences | US$4,000–6,000+ per person |
These are planning ranges, not published package prices. They are based on two travellers sharing a double or twin room and on a multi-region private itinerary. Your actual quotation can be lower or higher depending on the services selected.
International flights to and from Vietnam are not included in these ranges. Domestic flights, cruises, meals and activities should be checked line by line in the individual proposal because the exact inclusions depend on the itinerary.
A private tour is not the same as a luxury tour
A private tour means that the vehicle, guiding and itinerary are arranged for you and your travelling companions rather than for a coach group of unrelated travellers. It can use comfortable 3-star hotels, boutique 4-star properties or 5-star resorts.
A luxury tour describes the level of accommodation and services. Private transport may be the same basic format, while the price rises because of hotel category, room type, cruise cabin, premium dining, private boats, specialist experiences or upgraded transfers.
In other words, you do not need to book five-star hotels to have a fully private Vietnam itinerary.
What normally makes a private Vietnam tour more expensive?
1. Hotel category — and the exact room, not only the star rating
Accommodation is usually one of the largest parts of the land-tour budget. But a room category can matter almost as much as the hotel’s star rating.
A standard room in a good city hotel, a river-view suite in Hue, a beachfront villa, a heritage property in Hanoi and a premium cruise cabin in Ha Long Bay can all create very different costs even within the same broad comfort category.
This is why comparing two quotations only by the number of stars can be misleading. Check the property, room category, location and included meal plan.
2. The number of travellers
Private travel has shared costs. A guide, vehicle and some transfers may cost roughly the same whether they serve two people or four people, so the per-person cost can fall as those services are divided among more travellers.
Accommodation behaves differently: each additional room adds its own cost. This means a family of four in two rooms does not simply pay twice the price of a couple, but it also does not receive a perfect 50% saving on shared services.
Solo private travel is usually more expensive per person because one traveller carries all of the private vehicle and guiding costs and normally pays for a single room rather than sharing.
3. How many days actually need a private guide and vehicle
A 14-day trip does not automatically require a guide and car for 14 full days.
Some travellers prefer guided sightseeing in Hanoi, Hue, the Mekong and rural regions but want free time in Hoi An or at the beach. Others want a guide available throughout most of the journey.
Removing unnecessary guided days can reduce cost without making the itinerary less private. The important thing is to keep guiding where interpretation or logistics add real value.
For more detail on the role of the guide, see Our Local Guides in Vietnam.
4. The route and number of domestic flights
Vietnam is long. A private North-to-South trip usually works better when some of the longest gaps are covered by domestic flight rather than by private car.
Adding flights raises the quoted price, but it can save a large amount of holiday time. On the other hand, a journey concentrated in Northern Vietnam may use mostly road transport and therefore have a very different cost structure from a 14-day route that combines Hanoi, Hue, Hoi An and Ho Chi Minh City.
See our Tips for Internal Flights in Vietnam for the practical side of domestic flying.
5. Ha Long Bay and other cruises
An overnight cruise can represent a substantial part of the price of a northern itinerary because the cabin, meals, boat programme and onboard services are bundled together.
A standard cabin on a good shared cruise, a balcony suite, a premium vessel and a private charter are not comparable products. If two tour quotes differ significantly, the Ha Long or Lan Ha Bay cruise is one of the first inclusions worth checking.
6. Activities and private experiences
Entrance tickets to ordinary monuments rarely explain a large difference between two complete tour prices. More specialised services can.
Examples include private boats, premium cruises, specialist guides, multi-day trekking support, cooking classes, cycling support, performance tickets, spa treatments or private cultural experiences. A good tailor-made itinerary should include these because they fit the trip — not simply to make the programme look fuller.
7. Travel dates and availability
There is no single nationwide “high season” that affects every hotel in Vietnam in exactly the same way. Rates can change according to destination, school holidays, weekends, public holidays, Tết, Christmas/New Year periods, local festivals and major events.
Availability also matters. When the most suitable hotel or cruise category is full, the remaining alternatives may be more expensive. This is one reason the same itinerary can produce a different quotation for two different departure dates.
What is usually included in a private Tonkin Travel quotation?
The exact list always belongs to the individual proposal, but a complete private land itinerary will normally specify items such as:
- accommodation in the named category, usually with breakfast;
- private road transfers and a vehicle with driver where stated;
- English-speaking local guide services on the guided days;
- entrance fees for the visits included in the programme;
- boats, cruises and activities clearly listed in the itinerary;
- meals marked as included;
- domestic flights or train tickets when specifically included in that proposal;
- applicable local service charges and taxes included by the supplier as stated in the quote.
Never assume a service is included simply because another itinerary includes it. The written proposal is the reference.
What is usually not included?
- international flights to and from Vietnam;
- visa or entry-document costs where applicable;
- travel insurance;
- meals and drinks not listed as included;
- personal expenses, shopping and spa treatments unless specifically included;
- tips and gratuities;
- early check-in or late check-out unless arranged;
- any service not mentioned in the confirmed itinerary.

Why two 14-day Vietnam tours can differ by thousands of dollars
| Comfort-focused couple | Premium-focused couple |
|---|---|
| Well-located 3–4 star hotels | 5-star heritage hotels and suites |
| Good shared overnight Ha Long cruise | Premium suite or private cruise option |
| Guide on the key cultural days | More fully guided programme and specialist experiences |
| Local restaurants with selected meals included | More premium dining and included meals |
| Standard room categories | Views, suites, resort upgrades or premium locations |
Both trips are private. The difference is the level and density of services rather than whether one couple is on a group tour and the other is not.
How much does a 14-day private Vietnam tour cost?
For a useful route example, our 14-Day Vietnam Itinerary combines Hanoi and Ninh Binh, an overnight Ha Long Bay cruise, Hue, Hoi An, Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta.
That type of journey requires more logistics than a two-week holiday concentrated in one region: several hotels, long transfers, domestic flights, a cruise and multiple guided areas. That is why its price should not be compared directly with a 14-day independent stay using public transport and a few day tours.
If you have three weeks, the question is not simply whether to multiply the 14-day cost by 1.5. A longer itinerary may add free days, beach nights or slower stays with fewer guided services, while another 21-day route may add remote mountain regions, more flights and specialist activities. See our 3-Week Vietnam Itinerary for route-planning context.
How to reduce the price without turning the trip into a budget tour
Use guides selectively
Keep private guiding for the days where historical, cultural or logistical context matters most, and leave suitable city or beach days free.
Spend on the hotel where you will actually use it
A resort upgrade may be worthwhile when you have two or three slow nights. Paying heavily for a premium room on a one-night transit stop may add much less to the experience.
Mix hotel categories
You do not need the same hotel category at every destination. A good boutique property in Hanoi, a premium cruise cabin in the bay and a simpler rural stay can create a more interesting trip than applying one star rating mechanically from beginning to end.
Remove unnecessary backtracking
A geographically coherent route saves both time and transport cost. Our Vietnam Tourist Map explains which destinations naturally fit together.
Tell the travel designer your budget early
A realistic budget is useful information, not something to hide until the end. It allows the itinerary to be designed around the right hotel level, number of guided days and transport choices from the beginning instead of building an expensive programme and cutting it apart later.
How to compare two private-tour quotations properly
| Check | Why it changes the price |
|---|---|
| Hotel name + exact room category | “4-star” alone does not show location, room quality or view. |
| Private vehicle on which days? | A fully supported touring day costs more than a free day with no vehicle. |
| Guide on which days? | Some quotes include a guide throughout; others only for selected visits. |
| Domestic flights | Check whether airfare, taxes and baggage are included or provisional. |
| Ha Long / Lan Ha cruise | Vessel, cabin category and shared versus private cruising can create a large difference. |
| Meals | Breakfast-only and half/full-board programmes are not directly comparable. |
| Entrance fees and activities | Some cheaper quotations move optional excursions outside the package. |
| Airport transfers | Arrival and departure transfers may or may not be part of the land quote. |
| Taxes / compulsory surcharges | Check whether the amount shown is genuinely the amount payable for your dates. |
| Cancellation and payment terms | A cheaper non-refundable arrangement is not equivalent to a more flexible booking. |
Private tour versus independent travel: why the budgets are different
Vietnam can be travelled independently for much less than a fully arranged private journey. Hostels, public buses, self-booked hotels, street food and occasional group day trips can produce a low daily budget.
That figure should not be presented as the price of a private tour.
A private proposal may include door-to-door vehicles, local guides, selected hotels, domestic logistics, pre-arranged entrances, a cruise and operational support. You are paying for a different travel model, not simply a more expensive version of the same backpacker budget.
Frequently asked questions about private Vietnam tour costs
How much is a private Vietnam tour for two people?
For a multi-region 14-day itinerary, Tonkin Travel’s current 2026 planning range is approximately US$2,000–2,800 per person at Comfort level, US$2,800–4,000 at Deluxe level and US$4,000–6,000+ at Luxury level, based on two travellers sharing. The exact quotation depends on dates and services.
Does a private Vietnam tour include international flights?
Normally the land-tour quotation is separate from your international flights unless the proposal explicitly states otherwise. Domestic flights within Vietnam may be included when they are part of the itinerary; check the quotation.
Are domestic flights included?
They can be. On a North-to-South itinerary, domestic flights are often built into the land arrangements, but this is itinerary-specific. Confirm airfare, taxes and baggage in the inclusion list.
Is a private tour cheaper with four people?
The per-person price often falls because guide and vehicle costs are shared between more travellers. Hotel-room costs still increase according to the number and type of rooms required.
Why is a solo private tour more expensive?
A solo traveller cannot divide the private vehicle, guide and room costs with another person. A single-room supplement may also apply. Ask for a specific solo quote rather than doubling or dividing a couple’s price yourself.
Can I set a budget before the itinerary is designed?
Yes. In fact, giving a realistic target budget is useful. It helps the travel designer select the right hotel level, route, number of guided days and activities before preparing the proposal.
Is the cheapest quotation the best value?
Not necessarily. Compare hotel and room categories, guide coverage, vehicles, flights, cruise level, meals, entrances, activities, taxes and booking conditions before deciding whether two prices represent the same trip.
The most useful price is the one built around your actual trip
A broad price range can tell you whether a private Vietnam journey fits your budget. It cannot tell you what your trip will cost until the route and level of service are clear.
Tell us your dates, number of travellers, preferred hotel style, approximate budget, interests and the pace you enjoy. Tonkin Travel can then build the itinerary and quotation together, so the price reflects the trip you actually want rather than a generic package.
